Puna Geothermal Venture Regulatory Support

Location: Puna, HI
Client: Puna Geothermal Venture

Since 1996, TEC has provided environmental monitoring and regulatory support for the Puna Geothermal Venture, which operates a geothermal power plant on the island of Hawaii and is the only commercial producer of geothermal energy in Hawaii. The 30-megawatt plant uses air-cooled condensers and noise reduction enclosures and has near zero emissions. One hundred percent of its geothermal fluid and gas is reinjected into the deep earth. TEC is responsible for seismic monitoring, air quality, meteorological, noise, and hydrological monitoring programs; assistance in obtaining permits and approvals; ensuring regulatory compliance; and collection and submission of data required by various federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. The data collection system continuously monitors and records air quality, meteorological, and noise data. TEC downloads data and provides a daily summary of hydrogen sulfide data to PGV. In addition, TEC prepares and submits monthly air quality, meteorological, and noise reports for submission to the regulating agencies. TEC also performs quarterly groundwater sampling at six wells and provides appropriate reports. All monitoring is consistent with the current and approved Hydrologic Monitoring Program developed specifically for Puna Geothermal Venture.
