TEC prepared the 2030 Master Plan for Kahului Harbor on Maui. Kahului is the only commercial harbor in Maui County and serves as the primary source for import of essential commodities and export of local goods. The Master Plan covers several areas of concern, including maritime cargo (containers, general, neo-bulk, dry and liquid bulk), passenger operations (cruise, ferry), recreational uses (small boats, canoe clubs, surfers), navigation, coast guard facilities, and assorted ancillary activities. TEC developed projections for all cargo and cruise passenger operations through 2030. Using in-house computer models, TEC evaluated existing and projected capacities for berthing, open storage, and covered storage for all cargoes. TEC planners developed several alternatives to accommodate future growth and improve operational efficiencies. As part of the Environmental Impact Statement associated with the Master Plan, TEC participated in public meetings to address concerns of harbor users, local government, and citizen groups.
