Airfield Maintenance Facility Master Plan, Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni

Location: Iwakuni, Japan
Client: Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Pacific

TEC assisted  Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and NAVFAC Pacific in creating an Airfield Maintenance Facility Master Plan for a newly created 30-acre airfield site. This work was executed under a joint planning agreement between the U.S. government and the Government of Japan. TEC was in the field to assist with only 5 days notice. After preliminary interviews, our staff facilitated a multi-day onsite charrette that established space needs and validated major planning requirements including Anti-terrorism/Force Protection. The team developed a clear rational of development that outlined several possible scenarios that were understandable and defensible. The process resulted in a preferred plan for three maintenance facilities (totaling 470,000 square feet of covered space and an additional 250,000 square feet of exterior space) that maximized functional efficiencies and that all stakeholders supported.
