Renovation Support, Alderman Library, University of Virginia

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Client: University of Virginia

Alderman Library, designed by Taylor and Fisher and completed in 1938, is a 250,000 square foot, 8-story facility serving as the University’s main library.  With 60+ years of use, functionality and efficiency have been dramatically impacted by changes in library services, new technology demands, and aged building systems. TEC participated in a capital project formulation study to modernize the library.

The study addressed the infrastructure challenges of creating a 21st century facility that would accommodate collections and provide study space while fostering collaboration and encouraging interdisciplinary connections.  TEC facility planners and programmers addressed alternative concepts, associated cost estimates, and phasing alternatives to support capital project planning.

Following the study, TEC provided renovation design and construction support for the Scholar’s Lab – a partial renovation to supporting advanced scholarship and new technology.
