The University of Virginia’s Printing and Copying Services (PCS) facility has earned coveted LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification established by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.
The following practices contributed to the PCS project’s LEED Silver credits: recycled and post-consumer content building products; locally extracted and manufactured building products; indoor air quality management plan; daylighting of over 90% of occupied spaces, and highly reflective white EPDM roof membrane to reduce solar gain and heat island effect.
PCS operates as an internal department of the University offering printing, copying, graphic design, and mailing services for multiple clients. The existing facility was a renovated bowling alley located in close proximity to the University’s central grounds. After evaluation of the current facility, Cardno TEC programmed a new 15,000 SF addition to accommodate expanded service, storage and delivery requirements. The new design reflects the same materials as those used in the existing facility, such as red brick veneer, ceramic facing tiles, translucent panels and white metal panels. Cardno TEC also prepared a formulation study and site analysis; furnished the associated design and contract documents, and provided construction administration services.
