TEC led a team for the development of a Transportation Strategy for the Province of Aceh in Indonesia. Infrastructure in Aceh Province suffered significant damage as a result of the 2005 earthquake and tsunami. Since then, reconstruction efforts in the transportation sector have focused primarily on recovery and rehabilitation efforts to the road network; however, the tsunami also damaged many of the ports in the province, and relief efforts in the region have been hampered by inadequate airport capacity and the lack of a rail system. This United States Trade and Development Agency funded Technical Assistance Study developed a strategy to maximize the efficiency of the overall transportation sector in Aceh Province, addressing not only the road network, but also the port, railway, and aviation sectors, as well. For the Ports Sector, TEC evaluated the existing regional cargoes and presented a recommendation to develop a hub and feeder port system linking the various production regions of the province. TEC also recommended that the region was strategically located to serve as a transshipment port for regional cargoes and shipping.
